Campaign for new skate ramp in Leamington

Skateboarders are campaigning to have a ramp replaced in Victoria Park after the old one was taken down for health and safety reasons.

The ramp, which had been in the Leamington park for about 15 years, was used by up to 30 skaters a day at its busiest times but Warwick District Council was forced to remove it at the end of April after rain corrosion had rendered it unsafe.

Alex Walker, 22, who has been skating for 11 years, is leading the campaign.

Mr Walker, a Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs volunteer who is studying to become a social worker, said: “It would be a waste of time if I just said ‘they’ve taken this down someone do something about it’.

“It’s a big thing for me and it is like work experience as well.

“Before we start a petition we want to speak to councillors first and see if we can get them on side before we say ‘oh we are just doing this’ and kick off about it.

“If they can offer us guidance and advice first we should go with them.”

Mr Walker has said the 5ft half-pipe was part of Leamington’s ‘skateboarding heritage’ which dates back to when Ford’s Field had a ‘vert’ ramp more than 20 years ago.

With youngsters also using the half-pipe for their micro scooters and BMX bikes it provided a place for them to meet and improve their skills.

Mr Walker said: “For some of them it is a really big thing because there isn’t a lot else to do in this area.

“One lad just started but there is nowhere safe for him to skate.Even Newbold Comyn’s skate park is more of a health hazard.

“The ramp was a massive part of my life and I can say the same for a lot of other people my age.”

Mr Walker has plans for a new ramp and ideas for new designs, which could include an expansion, and is also making enquiries about possible funding.

The campaigner met Leamington and Warwick MP Chris White this week and he will also meet cultural services officer Dave Anderson.

Rose Winship, the district council’s head of cultural services, said: “We are already talking to other organisations about raising funds, because these things aren’t cheap, but there are no guarantees this will happen.

“I’m not saying it won’t go ahead but it might take some time.”
