Bronze medallist to inspire at club open day

AN Olympic athlete will be given a hearty reception at Warwick Hockey Club tomorrow (Saturday) after it was selected as a winner in a national competition.

Being selected by the England Hockey Board in its Harvester National Club Weekend comptition, which was based on what people had to say about their club on the board’s Facebook page, means the club will be visited by team GB hockey player Sally Walton at an open weekend.

Sally, a bronze medallist in the London 2012 Games, will be on hand to offer tips and advice to visitors, who will be given a chance to pick up a stick and have a go at various hockey activities and competitive and social games.

The former Aston Villa Ladies football player, who comes from Solihull, made her international debut as a hockey player in 2005.

All 16 bronze medalists from the women’s squad as well as some of the GB men’s squad will be travelling around the country to visit the chosen clubs as part of the board’s ‘Hockey Nation’ campaign.

New members are particularly welcome to the open day, to which people of all ages and abilities are encouraged to go.

Some of the comments submitted on the board’s Facebook page about the Warwick club pointed out that the club has expanded its junior section and provides “excellent opportunities” for people of all ages, with some of its volunteers visiting primary schools in the area.

The open day, which will also include a barbecue all afternoon, at the club in Hampton Road starts at 12.30pm.
