Ambulance crews to be honoured for riots response

MEMBERS of the ambulance service that serves Warwickshire are to be honoured for their efforts to deal with injured people during the riots in August.

Frontline ambulance crews, control room operatives and support staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service who were directly involved in the aftermath of the civil disorder that took place for three nights in Birmingham and the Black Country will be presented with awards at a ceremony on Friday.

Chief ambulance officer Anthony Marsh said: “Our staff were directly involved in dealing with the aftermath of the disturbances dealing with patients who were injured in the violence. In addition a number became targets themselves as they went to deal with seriously injured or ill patients.

“Despite the difficulties, we were able to continue providing a first rate emergency service. The calmness, dedication and fortitude of those who had to deal with the sometimes horrific situations deserve our highest praise.

“This awards ceremony will give the trust a chance to mark the bravery and dedication of our staff while taking time to remember the three men who so tragically lost their lives.”

The ceremony will take place at the Council House in Birmingham.
