Family homes just yards from Kenilworth Castle

The site of historic stables, wagon repair workshops and a “cart hovel” belonging to Kenilworth Castle is being transformed into something more suited to 21st century living - a small development of family properties which are being marketed by Brian Holt’s Kenilworth office.

The two detached and two semi-detached 1,300 sq ft, three bedroom homes are just yards from the castle off Clinton Lane, and the road on which they are being built is to be named in memory of the man who bought the land from the castle’s 2,800 acre estate during the First World War.

Herbert Bond, whose grandchildren live next door to where the quartet of houses is being built, bought the plot in 1917 for the princely sum of £500.

As well as the two cottages occupied by Mr Bond’s descendants, it included a bakehouse, pigsty, stable, smithy and cart hovel as well as the wagon repair workshop and sheds.

Alas, the replacement dwellings will be a little more than the sum shrewd Mr Bond paid for the site nearly a century ago, although doubtless they will afford slightly more luxurious accommodation.

Each house in Herbert Bond Drive offers a long through kitchen, dining, family room, separate living room and downstairs cloakroom, while upstairs are three double bedrooms, one with en suite and two with fitted wardrobes.

The kitchen area has a full range of fitted appliances – washer drier, dishwasher, fridge freezer and cooker with extractor fan.

The properties benefit from energy efficient solar thermal water, have energy efficient condensing boilers, are fully uPVC double glazed and have two parking spaces apiece.

The houses, which share the same internal layout, are being built by Warwickshire developer Courts.

Priced between £355,000 and £435,000, they will be available for occupation from late July.

Funding is available through the government’s new Help to Buy scheme which means buyers may only need to find a 5 per cent deposit.
