Mean streets of New York come to Leamington

THE violent gangs, street culture and disillusioned youth of 1950s New York City will come alive at a Leamington theatre this week.

The Loft Theatre is bringing its production of the Broadway musical West Side Story to its stage from Wednesday until Saturday December 15.

The re-telling of Romeo and Juliet, written by Stephen Sondheim, has continued to captivate audiences since it premiered in 1957 on Broadway - since when it has been revived several times both in New York and in London’s West End, as well as in many other productions across the globe.

The well-known story follows Tony, the all-American Jet, and Maria, the Puerto Rican immigrant Shark, who meet and fall in love.

Their complicated relationship sparks off fighting between their two different gangs on the tough streets of New York.

Loft director Tim Willis said: “I relish challenges which continue to stretch the skills and imagination.

“West Side Story requires a highly skilled and committed team to bring the show to our stage – a stage where you would not normally expect to see a show of this size - and putting the whole thing together has been a huge theatrical challenge for the team.”
