Kitsch art takes over as Leamington pupils host exhibition

GIANT cupcake sculptures and vibrant lilly paintings are among the works of art created by hundreds of pupils at a Leamington school for a major show.

Youngsters from years seven to 13 at Trinity School have contributed to the school’s Kitsch Exhibition, which opens on Monday and runs until Friday March 1.

Associated with ‘low’ or sentimental art, the kitsch genre seems only to includes‘high’ art if it is reduced to a commercialised product available to the masses via objects such as key rings, tea towels and mugs.

Working with Ellie Brooks, Gill Jopia, Katherine Waters and Julia Claxton - the school’s artists-in-residence - the pupils have been discussing this idea and questioning why kitsch art is often seen as being unrefined, vulgar or inferior.

The teenagers have also worked with Natasha Triassi to create kitsch fashion wear and Helena Godwin on plaster and stone carvings based on the image of Madonna and Child.

The display is open from 9am to 3.15pm each day at the school in Guys Cliffe Avenue. To find out more, call 428416.
