The Kenilworth Round Table Fireworks event at Kenilworth Castle will not go ahead this year due to Covid-19.

Organisers say it was a hard decision to make - it is first time in 32 years that the event has been cancelled.

The Kenilworth Round Table added: "The current Gov.uk Covid-19 advice for large gatherings, in line with social distancing guidelines, is that they should not take place.

"They state that while the risks of transmitting the disease at mass gatherings are relatively low, these steps will also allow emergency services that would have been deployed for these events to be prioritised in alleviating pressure on public services.

"How and when this advice may change leads to continued uncertainty for the event."

The current Kenilworth Round Table Fireworks event chairman for 2020/21, James Selby, said: “People’s health and safety at the event is our number one priority.

"The event is put on for the enjoyment of Kenilworth and the surrounding communities as well as raising substantial sums of money for charity, so this has not been an easy decision but is the right one to take in these exceptional times – it’s the first time it’s been cancelled in 32 years”.

He added: “There are many months of planning ahead of the event itself, with fantastic support from much of the community, from marshalling to public support services, and numerous suppliers.

"We need to provide clarity and so have made this decision to cancel now.”

The Kenilworth Round Table is well known for the decades of charitable support of the local community through events each year such as the fireworks at Kenilworth Castle in November, Santa’s Sleigh in December, and the Senior Citizens’ Party in March.

The fireworks event is a major fundraiser so Kenilworth Round Table’s chairman, Stuart Greenwood, has initiated a JustGiving page - https://www.justgiving.com/kenilworthroundtable - for people to donate, despite the event not going ahead.

Stuart said: “Whilst Kenilworth Round Table still has some funds to give to good causes, every donation made will help make a big change to those most in need in the community during the next year.

"We would be extremely grateful for any donation, no matter how big or small, as it always makes a difference”.
