Champions Colebridge are in no mood to rest on their laurels

Reigning Division One champions Colebridge A signalled their intent by walloping Free Church B 9-1 the opening week of the Leamington & District League season, writes Phil John.

Mike Rinnhofer and Ben Willson claimed maximums, with Sam Weaving staving off the whitewash by beating Kate Hughes.

Runners-up Free Church A had the same winning margin against WCC A, with Timmy Cooper and Lee Dorning notching hat-tricks and the doubles and Tom Brocklehurst only denied a full house by Phil Paine.

Rugby A also won 9-1 against newly promoted Free Church C.

Ryan Lines and Ryan Stockham were unbeaten in the singles and doubles while Matt Outhwaite won twice.

The addition of Lawrence Sweeney makes St George’s B contenders and they opened up by hammering Colebridge B 10-0 with Mark Jackson and Ron Vose joining Sweeney.

Young Sam Cafearo starred for Rugby B in their Division Two draw with Colebridge C, taking a treble.

Danny Orr chipped in with two while Michael Credland scored twice and John Overton and Neil Wheatley one apiece in reply. Credland and Wheatley claimed the vital doubles.

Rugby C also drew, away at Millennium A. Ben Holvey’s triple was pivotal and Hugh Crosfield lent support, winning a singles and joining Holvey for doubles success. Jack Garner and Christian Ward picked up braces for the home side and Joe McGivern won once.

Relegated Nomads Enigmas’ quest to bounce straight back began with a 7-3 win over St George’s C.

Steve Proctor was unbeaten in singles and doubles.

Phoenix’s Paul Calloway posted a typical maximum but his side only secured one more win, through Gordon Tucker, as they succumbed 6-4 to St George’s D.

Andy Caine and Tracey Fletcher each took two and Richard Grover won a single and combined with Fletcher for the crucial doubles.

Promoted Whitnash B had an eye-catching 7-3 successwin over Eathorpe B in Division Three.

Pete Elliott won three and took the doubles alongside Jayne Fitton, who won once. Wilf Chan took two.

Newcomer Binh-Khoi Nguyen won twice in reply for the villagers.

Another newcomer, Dave Ramsey, starred for Free Church G, claiming a maximum in their 7-3 win over Nomads C.

Twelve-year-old Ricardo Bolanos chipped in with two as did Tom Fletcher.

Ken Southwell won twice in response and Les Hoggins and Richard Miles took the doubles.

After a lay-off through injury, Emma Kilpatrick recaptured much of her old form to take a treble for Free Church H in their 8-2 Division Four win over Free Church I.

In the division’s other all-Free Church clash, their G side pipped their J team 6-4 with Nick Darwen and Dan Shaw taking braces and Joe Mills a single before pairing with Shaw for the doubles.

Mike Weaving enjoyed two successes for the losing side.
