Williams impresses on his step up to senior level

Cleary's ABC's Lewis Williams was a convincing winner of his first senior bout on Friday night, fighting without headgear for the first time to beat South Derby ABC's Ross Hollis.

Hollis, four year older than Williams and a veteran of 53 fights is the East Midlands Elite champion.

However, despite matching the bout himself, Hollis was always second-best to Williams who claimed a deserved points victory.

Coach Edwin Cleary was understandably delighted with the World Youth quarter-finalist’s transition to the senior ranks and said his view was backed up by the defeated man.

“Lewis is a very special boxer, he thrives on turning people’s heads,” said Cleary.

“Hollis has boxed most of the top boxers in the UK and has picked Lewis out to go all the way to the very top.

“The ABAs start at the end of March and Lewis, who has already sparred last year’s champion in preparation for the Worlds, will fear no one.

“We believe Lewis is the dark horse this season and we can’t wait for the champs to start.”

Lewis will be joined in the Elite ABAs by stablemates Danny Quartermaine and Sean Greenfield.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick’s ABC boxer Sean Leahy suffered a tight split decision loss to undefeated West Warwicks boxer Dylan Nolan at Triumph on Sunday.

“This was a bout where both young men came out with credit,” said Leahy’s coach Derek Fitzpatrick.

“And, when a split decision was announced, both clubs were unsure which way it would go, but it was to be Nolan’s day.”

Fitzpatrick went on to say “there were too many positives to be taken to be disheartened by the decision”.

“The defeat will prove a learning one for Sean,” he added.

“It will be the kick up the bum he needs to improve his workrate.”
