Sky is investigating presenter Kay Burley over a Covid rules breach - but what did she do?

Kay Burley is well-known for asking hard hitting questions and holding government ministers to account on her daily breakfast show on Sky News.

However, Burley was absent from the show on Tuesday 8 December, due to an ongoing investigation into an alleged breach of Covid-19 restrictions.

Burley admitted breaking the rules while celebrating her 60th Birthday at the weekend in London, where people currently remain in tier 2 of government guidelines.

So what did she do? Here is everything you need to know.

What did Kay Burley admit to?

The 60-year-old took to Twitter on the evening of 7 December to apologise for breaking lockdown restrictions.

She admitted that ‘desperate for the loo’ she visited a venue she had not been dining in.

In doing so she broke the rules, as it is thought she did not not provide her details for track and trace purposes.

She wrote to her 517,000 followers: "Evening everyone. I want to apologise to you all for an error of judgement. On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid compliant restaurant.

"I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules.

"I had been waiting for a taxi at 11pm to get home. Desperate for the loo I briefly popped into another restaurant to spend a penny."

However, there have been allegations that the presenter’s rule breaking went further.

How else is Burley thought to have broken the rules?

It has now been widely reported that the presenter, along with 10 Sky colleagues, dined at Soho private members' club, Century Club.

Colleagues in attendance allegedly include Sky’s political correspondent, Beth Rigby, as well as Inzamam Rashid and Sam Washington.

Current UK Government guidelines state: “you must not mix with anyone who is not part of your household or support bubble when you are indoors.”

The Century Club does have a private rooftop garden which would be deemed as an outdoor space, but it is not known if Burley and her friend dined outdoors.

If the party took place inside, despite rumours the group dined on two separate tables of six and four, this would still amount to a breach of Covid restrictions.

The group are then thought to have then visited another bar, Folie, before four of them reportedly went back to Kay’s London home to continue celebrations.

What happens now?

Burley will now face an internal investigation by Sky News, alongside any guests also employed by the broadcaster.

She was replaced on her 8 December show by Sarah Hewson.

The UK government guidance states “You can be given a fixed penalty notice of £200 for the first offence, doubling for each further offence up to £6,400.”

It has not been suggested that Ms Burley faced a government penalty for her behaviour.
