Warwick blooms again in summer spectacular

Warwick is blooming with pride after another round of spectacular winners in its annual garden competition were announced.

Everything from hanging baskets to sprawling garden displays and impressive topiary were judged this week in the town’s annual summer contest to get gardens and open spaces blooming.

And with record number of entrants and even new gardens on the list this year, organisers have hailed it as another great summer for Warwick.

The efforts will all help put Warwick forward in it’s entry to the Heart of England In Bloom contest which will be judged by national garden critics on Monday.

National Grid won the Environmental Award with its impressive living wall - earning it the highest score in the competition.

And in pubs, restaurant and homes others scooped top spots for their colourful efforts.

Cllr Mandy Littlejohn, chair of the community and culture committee, said: “This was another fantastic year for Warwick, we are so pleased.

“We had more entries than ever before and the competition is getting tougher with so many outstanding entries.

“All judging goes on the impact of the displays, quality and maintenance and community participation in certain categories, so we really are pleased with how well every entry did to wow judges.

“National Grid was judged in a category of its own as it would be very hard to find a more spectacular entry, we are lucky to have such a display in the town.”

Who won what?

The Conservative Club and New Bowling Green House both achieved gold and won their categories.

The Antique Centre also achieved a gold award for their “spectacular” hanging baskets.

Judges said two new entries both scooped the top spot with gold awards on their first try - Michelle Caney and Kevin Saunders for their “very well thought out” small garden, and Antony Griffin of Stratford Road with his “very high maintenance” large garden which was described by the judging team a horticulturists delight.

Green-fingered, Mark Robertson also achieved a gold award and won the category for his domestic window boxes, tubs and baskets.

And the sheltered accommodation gold was won by Montgomery Court for its impressive community garden.

In the schools category, All Saints and Newburgh Primary schools both won gold for “wonderful children’s projects”

All Saints was also crowned overall winner of the category for all the effort put in by pupils and staff.

Albert Street and West Street (East Side) were also presented with gold awards and Albert Street came top in its category for “fantastic community spirit”.

Pubic gardens including Mill Gardens, Saltisford Canal Trust Sensory Garden, Lord Leycester Hospital and Hill Close Gardens all achieved gold for their high scoring efforts- with Mill Gardens named as overall winner in the category for 2016.

Results of the town’s overall place in the Heart of England in Bloom will be announced in September where Warwick hopes to retain last year’s gold placement.
