Plans for 147 new homes in Sydenham on display today

Plans to build 147 new homes on land in Sydenham will be on display at a community centre in the area today (Wednesday).

Deeley Properties Ltd and Orbit Group Ltd are proposing to submit a full planning application to remove existing commercial buildings and deliver up to 147 affordable dwellings, including 51 low cost market sale properties as well as public open space, on brownfield land off Sydenham Drive on the industrial estate north of St Mary’s road, which is currently occupied by several businesses and organisations including Golden Acre Car Company, Bellagio Stone and the Action 21 Recycling Warehouse and shared with many redundant industrial units including those formerly occupied by Elisabeth the Chef.

The plans will be on display at the Sydni Centre in Cottage Square from 4pm to 7pm with an application due to be submitted at the end of the month or early April.

Ward councillor John Barrott (Lab, Willes) said, “We would welcome some housing in the area provided it was both affordable and good quality.

“Residents are already questioning the configuration and quality aspect of the proposals as drawn following the leaflet from Deeley and Orbit.”

He added, “I’ve had the chance to briefly discuss the plans with Labour councillors in the area and we have serious reservations in that regard. In addition we need to be fully satisfied that any loss of industrial land to housing will not lead to a loss of overall employment opportunities in the immediate area.

“Given the short notice of this consultation, I’m particularly interested to hear residents’ views.

“If you want to make your voice heard, please get in contact with any of you local Labour councillors or come along to our next surgery on Saturday April 5.

“We will be in Farley Street from 10am until 11am and then at the Sydenham shops until midday.”

Deeley and Orbit have said the development would enhance the area while also providing housing for families living and working in and around Leamington who provide support for local businesses, shops and schools as a part of a vibrant community.

Warwick District Council will have 12 weeks to determine the planning application.

It is then anticipated that work will begin on site during late 2014 or early 2015.
