Harbury Local Market to be held indoors again on Saturday

The market was set up three years ago to support charities based near the village and has raised almost £20,000 for good causes over the years

A village market, which started from humble beginnings and has gone on to raise thousands of pounds for nearby community groups and charities, will be held indoors for the first time in months on Saturday.

Villager Karena Ellis-Greenway first held the Harbury Local Market on her driveway more than three years ago but it soon grew too big for this site so it was moved to the Shakespeare pub where it stayed for two years.

The market grew more and was being held at the village primary school with between 20 and 25 stalls every last Saturday of each month before lockdown started last year.

Now that restrictions are easing, Harbury Parish Council has agreed for Karena and her team to hold the event indoors again - this time at the village hall.

The event will take place at the recently extended hall, in South Parade, on Saturday (May 1) from 10am to 12.30pm and social distancing rules will apply.

Karena said: "We understand the market will be one of the first events at the village hall following its recent extension.

"We have a solid meat/food section now and are looking to include a cheese and veg section soon.

"We continue to look for new and exciting local producers to come along – we might have a local goat meat company."

All the money raised from refreshment sales, a raffle and charges to stall holders are split among good causes in the village.

All producers who have a stall at the market are based within a 15-mile radius of the village.
