Man tasered in Leamington town centre

A 35-year-old man was tasered by police in Leamington town centre this afternoon after threatening to seriously hurt himself.

Police were called to Warwick Street just after 1.30pm on Wednesday to reports of a man threatening to harm himself - possibly with a knife.

The busy road was cordoned off while attempts were made to get him to safety but when negotiations failed, officers used a taser to control him.

The man, who is now receiving specialist help from ambulance crews, was tasered in what police said was “for his own safety” before being treated by paramedics.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called to the area after concern for the man’s safety.

“A 35-year-old man was threatening to harm himself. We negotiated with him and a taser was deployed for his safety.

“He has been detained and safely dealt with in the hands of the west Midlands Ambulance Service.”

The road is now reopened and nobody else was harmed in the incident.
