Libraries across Warwickshire have joined forces with schools to provide every primary-aged pupil with a personalised library card.
Starting with children from Newburgh, Ridgeway, Westgate and Woodloes primary schools in Warwick, the initiative was launched at Warwick Library on Tuesday.
Cllr Jenny St John (Con, Warwick North), who put forward the council’s original motion for the scheme, said: “The role public libraries play in promoting literacy cannot be underestimated. It is a great pleasure to see children discovering their local library services and using their cards for the first time.”
Research from the National Literacy Trust showing that children who use libraries are twice as likely to be above average readers. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Summer Reading Challenge held in Warwickshire libraries each year, help to prevent a dip in reading levels during the school break.
