'Reckless' trespassers light a fire in Kenilworth Castle

Police said they are stepping up patrols in the area after several reports of trespassing and anti-social behaviour

Trespassers have been spotted in Kenilworth Castle several times in recent weeks - and even lit a fire on their last visit.

Luckily, no damage has been done to 900-year-old castle but police said their actions were 'reckless' and could have easily caused major damage to the historic building.

Officers said they are stepping up patrols in the area.

A police spokesperson said: "Our team has been made aware of several recent trespassing and anti-social behaviour incidents occurring at Kenilworth Castle.

"During the most recent incident, unknown persons have decided to light a small fire next to the 900-year-old building.

"Fortunately no damage has been caused to the fabric of the building or to the nearby wooden walkways/stairs on this occasion.

"The reckless nature of this incident could easily of had a very different outcome.

"Should anyone see persons climbing over the surrounding castle walls please call 101 to report the matter."

Warwickshire Police will be supporting English Heritage in patrolling the area and they said 'robust action' will be taken against anyone found to be within the premises outside of opening days/times.
