Police officers were allegedly racially abused and spat at during three separate incidents in Warwickshire last night (Thursday) - with one happening in Leamington.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: "It was a challenging night for officers in our custody blocks."

Two officers at Leamington custody block two officers were allegedly racially abused by a man who had been arrested on suspicion of assault, committing a public order offence and criminal damage.

The 29-year-old man from Leamington was further arrested on suspicion of committing a racially aggravate public order offence.

His is currently in custody.

In a separate incident on the same night, an officer was allegedly spat at while a suspect was being booked in at the Nuneaton custody block.

The 26-year-old man from Nuneaton had been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Heath End Road, Nuneaton shortly before. He was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. His is currently in custody.

And in a further incident in the early hours of yesterday morning, an officer was allegedly racially abused while transporting a man to Nuneaton custody block.

The man had been arrested after it was alleged he swore at call handlers in our control room.

The 58-year-old man from Rugby was later charged with committing racially aggravated intentional harassment and persistently making use of the public communication network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety.

He will appear at Coventry Magistrates’ Court today (Friday).
