Ongoing calls for a better bus service in and around Sydenham have finally been answered with an extended service in place ready for the Christmas shopping period.
Sydenham residents and shoppers can now make use of a wider service from the number 67 bus which now covers the whole of Gainsborough Drive and Upper Sydenham Drive.
Changes to the Stagecoach service came into force last week after ongoing calls for a wider-reaching route.
Welcoming the update, Cllr Matt Western (Lab, Brunswick) who campaigned for the change, said: “It’s great news that the route has been modified at last. I have been pressing Stagecoach’s management over many months to get the changes that people have been asking for. I’m delighted that they listened and have acted.
“There are also a great many people who use these service on weekends to go shopping and to attend churches and the Sikh and Hindu temples and this will make their journey that much simpler and safer.”
From now on, more residents will be able to more easily use the service which stops along Gainsborough Drive.
The new route will also mean improved transport links for those living in sheltered accommodation in Campion View and along upper Sydenham Drive.
Bus user and resident Lilian Brocklehurst said: “The new route is a much needed improvement on the old one and will be a great help for many elderly residents getting to the shops and town centre.”
The revised route is advertised at stops and on buses.
A Stagecoach statement read: “There will be a minor change to route 67 around Sydenham and Green Farm from November 28.
“There are no changes to route 67 between Sydenham and Lillington.”
