Until Thursday July 14, Leamington Art Gallery & Museum: Mid Warwickshire Mencap 50 Year Anniversary exhibition. Mid Warwickshire Mencap are celebrating their 50 year anniversary since its founding as a charity in 1966. To mark this milestone, Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum are displaying an exhibition of how Mid Warwickshire Mencap has developed, from young mothers coming together to support their children with learning difficulties, to becoming an award winning local charity with significant achievement over the 50 years. Alongside the exhibition, The Way Ahead group, part of Mid Warwickshire Mencap, and learning and engagement officer Penelope Thomas will be running art workshops to create new work to be displayed in the Hammam. They will be using photographs they have taken around Leamington, and painting and collaging techniques, to create a mixed media sculpture. On Friday June 24, Derek Harvey, chief executive of Mid Warwickshire Mencap, will be giving a Friday Focus presentation about the history of the organisation and the work that they do. This is a free talk, no need to book.

Saturday July 9 to Sunday October 2, Compton Verney art gallery: Compton Verney is staging two new exhibitions celebrating an optimistic time of Britain’s future and laughter by the BBC. Guy’s Cliffe, Warwick, 2.30pm and 6pm: The Slaughterhouse Players present The Warwick Play in trademark tongue-in-cheek style. Guy of Warwick is a legendary English hero who travels far and wide to fight with dragons, giants, a Dun Cow and more so that he can become a knight and marry his love, the fair lady Phyllis, heiress of Rohand, Earl of Warwick. The story will be told at Guy’s Cliffe where it is said that Guy retired, residing in a cave that bears his name to this day. Members of the audience are being encouraged to arrive early to the performance so that they may have a look around Guy’s Cliffe, and make a purchase from the bar. Leamington Art Gallery and Museum, 6pm: The Imperial War Museums and Leamington Art Gallery & Museum are working together to screen the film The Battle of the Somme. Shot and screened in August 1916, it was the first feature length documentary about war and changed the way cinema was perceived by the public. In the year of its release around 20 million people, almost half the population of Britain at the time, watched The Battle of the Somme. Admission is free but places are limited.
