Fifth crown for Perry

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry bounced back from a semi-final defeat in the Meadowood Open to win the Delaware Open in Wilmington, USA - her fifth WSA title.

Perry had a straightforward 11-3, 11-4, 11-9 victory over the home club’s Alix Younger in the Meadowood Open at Winnipeg, Canada.

She followed up with an impressive 11-7, 12-14, 11-5, 11-3 defeat of Wales’ Tesni Evans to set up a semi-final against top seed Dipika Pallikal from India.

Pallikal raced to an early 7-1 lead before Perry got into the match and, despite the fourth seed responding to take the next, Pallikal went on to claim a 11-8, 6-11, 16-14, 11-2 victory.

Pallikal then went on to beat Joey Chan of Hong Kong in the final. Chan had earlier disposed of Leamington-born Emma Beddoes in straight games in the quarters.

Delayed flights meant top seed Perry had little time to prepare for her first-round match against Canada’s Hollie Haughton in the Delaware Open and it showed as she struggled through 12-10, 11-7, 2-11, 11-6.

An 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 victory over Olga Ertlova from the Czech Republic earned Perry a semi-final berth and, after losing the first game 12-10 to Egypt’s Heba Al Torky, she responded to take the next game without dropping a point with a superb combination of volleys, drops and nicks.

Perry maintained the momentum, taking the match 10-12, 11-0, 11-4, 11-7.

Fourth seed Beddoes had good wins against Deon Saffrey of Wales (11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5) and Japan’s Misaki Kobayashi (12-10, 11-4, 11-5) but narrowly failed to make it an all-Warwickshire final, losing the other semi-final 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5, 11-13 to second seed Sam Cornett (Canada).

Perry went on to control every game in the final, playing her best squash of the week, to secure an 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 victory over Cornett.
