Warwick will be represented when the UK hosts its first-ever international Segway polo tournament at Rugby College on April 19.

Eleven teams are travelling from Barbados, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Spain and Finland to take part in the event, which will also feature five British teams made up of players from Warwick, Rugby, Lichfield, Ireland, London and Devon.

The tournament will act as eliminator for the Woz Challenge Cup, named after Apple co-founder and Segway polo player Steve Wozniak, with two British teams being invited to take part in the cup, which is being held in Cologne, Germany, in July.

Southam-based Mark Weller, who is a coach and founder of UK Segway Polo, says next month’s tournament is an ideal opportunity to increase the profile of the fledgling sport.

“We’re hoping this exciting tournament and family fun day will represent the first of many in this region, since the response and support from local and regional residents and businesses has been phenomenal - a testament to the sport’s characteristics of equality and its emphasis on fun,” said Weller.

“We’ve already attracted a substantial group of talented players and as we continually recruit for others, a league will become inevitable to supply more regular competitions.”

Proceedings in Rugby get under way at noon and run through until 5.30pm.

In addition to the action on the pitch, there will be Segway rides, a mini fun fair, face painting and food and drink available.

Guest presenters Rugby FM’s Jason Moss and Karl Ude-Martinez will be taking to the mics to keep spectators informed as the action unfolds.
