Adam Lester’s long journey from Monmouth to Bishops Bowl was made worthwhile when caught a 23lb 5oz pike from Greenhill Lake using dead bait mackerel.

Fishery owner Shaun Smart said: “It is one of a number of 20lb-plus pike we have seen from our lakes in what is turning out to be a very good year for the pike anglers.”

Meanwhile, Smart impressed in the opening round of Bishops Bowl’s winter pairs league.

Twenty-eight anglers are competing over six matches, with Smart landing 68lb, including 20 large carp, caught on pellet, bread and corn on the pole from Walworth Lake.

Steve Martin was second with 58lb of small carp on the pole and pellet from Marshes One, with Mark Skeggs weighing in 37lb from Walworth Lake on straight lead and popped-up bread for third.
