Kenilworth Town kicked off their Midland Combination Division Two campaign with two seven-goal thrillers, but after having the better of the first against Perrywood, their defensive frailites came back to haunt them in midweek as they lost out to Henley Forest.

A hat-trick from the returning Matty Lendon and a superb 25-yarder from Lee Burden sealed the points for Town in their season-opener at home to Perrywood.

However, despite strikes from Vlad Polak and Chris Hanrahan and an own goal from the Henley keeper, Town were always chasing the game in midweek, with Sam Manoochehri’s header wrapping up a 4-3 win for the visitors.

Manager Kev Kingham admitted his side had work to do defensively, but said the early start to the season meant it could be some time before Town find the consistency he craves.

“A bit of sloppiness in the first few games has cost us,” said Kingham, whose side still could have rescued a point in midweek had Polak not spurned a chance in the final minute.

“Those who have been down, though, must have been entertained.

“The lads are working hard and, after the Olympics, holidays and injuries are out the way, we can settle down.”

Town take a break from league action tomorrow when they entertain Chelmsley Town in the Les James Challenge Cup.

 Tash Devis and Bonnie Mountford scored two goals apiece as Kenilworth Town Ladies gained a well-deserved 4-2 win over Coventry Development in a pre-season friendly.
