RACING Club Warwick boss Curly O’Callaghan saw more positive signs from his fledgling side as they went down to a narrow defeat at the hands of their Southern League Division One Central visitors.

With recent signing Stuart Herlihy absent, Racers were distinctly second best in the opening 45 minutes against their higher-level opponents.

Goals from Seb Hamilton and Michael Williams gave Rugby a two-goal half-time cushion, but O’Callaghan was pleased with the way his side responded after the break, with Nathan Edgington halving the deficit from the spot.

“We played really well in the second half,” said O’Callaghan, who was full of praise for former Stratford striker Edgington.

“In the first half the young lads were overawed and let the occasion get to them.

“But in the second half, instead of being at the occassion, they played the occasion.”

Kenilworth Town are the visitors tomorrow (3pm) for the inaugural Castle Cup and O’Callaghan is hopeful of another decent turnout after improved attendances for the friendlies against Stratford Town and Rugby.

“Last Saturday was another good gate and it was pleasing to see the Warwick public coming back to have a look.

“In the two games they’ve seen so far they wouldn’t have been disappointed.”
