Kenilworth are hoping to soar after visit to Warwick Castle

Two Kenilworth teams spent an afternoon with their namesakes when they visited the Flight of the Eagles display at Warwick Castle.

The Kenilworth Town Eagles and Hawks under-nine teams jumped at the chance of watching the show and meeting the castle’s birds of prey up close.

After enjoying the display, the Eagles team met Sidney, a 27-year-old bald eagle and her handler David Carter and the Hawks were introduced to four year-old Bruce, a grey eagle buzzard and his handler James Falconbridge.

Carter said: “We were delighted to have the Kenilworth Town Eagles and Hawks as our guests.

“Like a footballer, a bird of prey has to be strong and determined but also nimble and quick and spot their opportunity to strike.

“We hope the players took inspiration from the birds and we wish both teams luck for next season.”

The Eagles and Hawks were set up by Kenilworth residents Adam Newington and Steve Tipton three years ago and have gone from strength to strength.

After starting with just eight boys, the squad now numbers 20 with six regular coaches. The Eagles have just enjoyed their most successful season, suffering just one league defeat.

Eagles coach Chris Harding, said: “We are grateful to Warwick Castle for treating the players to such a magnificent show and letting them meet the birds of prey afterwards.

“We are immensely proud of what both teams have achieved this year. The Eagles really have come together well and started playing brilliantly for each other as a team and they should be especially pleased to have had just one league defeat.”

Hawks coach Paul Dillon said: “The Hawks have shown real spirit, dedication and determination this season. They really deserved this treat at Warwick Castle as they have worked so hard for each other.

“We hope the experience inspires all our KTFC squad players to carry on flying high and makes them realise the sky’s the limit for the undertens’ league next season.”

Kenilworth are recruiting for more boys and girls to join the under-ten squad and will be running trials and taster sessions over the summer months.

Under tens’ manager Adam Newington added: “If your child is interested in playing football and will be going into Year 5 in September then we’d love to hear from you.

“We train every Wednesday at Castle Farm and play matches in the Mid-Warwickshire Boys’ League every Saturday morning.

“It’s great exercise and a brilliant way to make friends and have fun.”
