Fenney gifts Stafford Rangers friendly success

A Lewis Fenney error in the final minute condemned Leamington to a 2-1 defeat in their opening pre-season friendly at home to Stafford Rangers.

The keeper came to punch a booming free-kick from opposite number James Wren but got the trajectory all wrong and second-half substitute Ryan Wynter had the simple task of heading into the empty net.

It was a frustrating way for the hosts to end a largely forgettable clash which, save for some moments of invention from Jake Jones, was short on quality.

Joe Magunda and Nick Wellecomme did at least try to inject a bit of spice, but a few robust challenges aside, there was little to rouse their crowd from their sunshine-induced stupor as both sides showed early-season rustiness.

New Rangers signing Ben Haseley opened the scoring for the visitors in the 17th minute, slotting home after an Alex Curtis cut-back.

Rob Ogleby shot wastefully over after good work from Lee Moore before Jake Jones, Brakes standout performer, pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire Leamington level.

Ogleby headed a teasing Magunda cross wide from point-blank range and was again off terget in the second half after Jones had outwitted his marker.
