Preedy puts Lillington on the Highway to success

Lillington claimed a long-awaited friendly victory when they squeezed past visitors Highway 92-90 in a five- rink match.

Lillington boasted three winning rinks, the highest of which - nine shots - was skipped by Martin Preedy assisted by Ron Cooke, David Gowan and Grace Gallacher.

The other winning rinks were skipped by captain Malcolm Welch and Nigel Roach, both getting home by five shots.

Home Guard won their Tuesday fixture with Pottertons at Victoria Park by 90 shots to 43.

There were three winning rinks, the two highest of which were skipped by Les Woodfield and Fred Sawyer, who both completed 19-shot victories.

Dave Ballard claimed an 11-shot success.

Home Guard also beat St Barbara’s 67-52 in a four-rink game.

Woodfield once again skipped the highest winning rink, with Brian Smith, Ron Franklin and Pete Larkin helping him to an 18-shot victory.

The other successful rink was skipped by Mike Harrison (12 shots), with Denis Crossfield claiming a draw.

Avenue’s mencontinued their winning streak thanks to a comprehensive 69-26 success at Warwick Boat Club in a men’s three triples match.

Andy Sparkes skipped a 31-5, for the highest winning rink, with Tony Kent, Richard Muir and Graham Parker claiming a 26-6 success.

Avenue’s ladies claimed a hard-fought 46-40 triples win over Lillington Ladies.

Yvonne Pick (skip), Sue Holmes and Fran Parkerwon 13-10, with Terry Taylor (17-16) and Bernadette O’Donnell (16-14) also skipping narrow victories.

They then went on to beat Stoke Coventry in their Top Club encounter at Avenue Road to set up a tie with Snitterfield.

Lynn Houghton won the singles 21-14, while Bernadette O’Donnell and Yvonne Pick claimed the pairs 28-12.

Sue Holmes, Hannah Smith and Lisa Smith won the triples 25-11 but the rink of Fran Parker, Hazel Higgins, Terry Taylor and Maggie Hooper went down 23-8.

The Avenue rink of Ron Walton (skip), Colin Baldwin, Steve Franklin and Dean Whyte narrowly lost their County four-wood match at home to Royal Leamington Spa 30-28.

Despite the Walton quartet picking up six shots on the penultimate end to go a shot up, they conceded a three on the last end to lose the match.

Avenue buried Banbury Chestnuts in their mixed triples encounter with John Harris skipping Mick Preedy and Bernadette O’Donnell to a convincing 35-9 win.

Avenue are holding an open day on Sunday (11am to 4pm) at their Avenue Road home.

Bowls will be provided free of charge and the bar will be open and light refreshments available.
