Grosvenor fightback too late to deter Bax

Rugby Bowls Club’s Pat Bax became Warwickshire Ladies’ new singles supremo when on finals day at Solihull Municipal BC she beat Lillington’s Margaret Grosvenor 21-12.
With only 12 ends played, Bax was in sight of the winning post with an 18-4 advantage and, although Grosvenor made her final tally more respectable, it was too little too late.
In the two woods singles, Whitnash’s Maureen Tims raced into a 7-0 lead after five ends against Sherwood Park’s Gill Maund and maintained her advantage to win 16-9.
Tims, who is partnering Di Thurlbeck in the National 55 and over pairs today (Friday), was also part of the Benevolent triples-winning side, with Lyn Houghton the third member.
The trio claimed a 17-15 victory over Lillington’s Bernadette McDonnell, Grosvenor and Jacqui Cook.
McDonnell did have some consolation, however, after a fine come-from-behind victory over Royal Leamington Spa’s Cynthia Briggs in the unbadged singles.
McDonnell trailed 18-13 after 17 ends, but weighed in with a treble and two doubles to lead 20-18 and eventually hung on for a 21-19 win.
Lillington’s Georgina Cooper and Thornfield’s Jamie-Lea Winch won the under-25s pairs against Norgren’s Debbie Riches and Kay Sabin and go on to represent Warwickshire in the Nationals at Victoria Park tomorrow.
Fifteen-year-old Cooper is also competing in the Amy Rose competition next weekend.
In the champion of champions singles, Avenue Leamington’s Margaret Woof beat Sherwood Park’s Janet Scott 21-13, while in the mixed pairs, Southam’s Patsy and Kevin Tandy were 25-20 winners against Stratford’s Lynne Innes and Peter Parker.
Warwickshire County Bowls Association stage their championship finals at Three Spires BC on Sunday.
District representation in the morning comes in the fours, where Avenue Leamington take on Sherwood Park and the unbadged singles where Royal Leamington Spa’s Barry Connolly meets Whitnash’s Dan Ward.
The afternoon sees Avenue Leamington’s John Strain, Andy Strain and Andy Smith take on Rugby in the triples, Whitnash’s Dan Ward and Bournville’s Luke Moore meet in the under-25 singles and Royal Leamington Spa’s Ray White and Whitnash’s Adam Shuttleworth go head to head in the two-wood singles.
n Despite the rain-drenched start to the season, the preliminary rounds for the Warwick Town Triples have been completed, leaving four teams to battle it out for the historic trophy at Warwick Boat Club on Sunday.
The semi-finals will be played in the morning, with Snitterfield taking on Warwickshire County Council and Whitnash meeting Warwick Boat Club.
The final will take place in the afternoon, with Warwick mayor Elizabeth Higgins on hand to present the trophies.
