The Warwickshire County Clout Championships at the Bowflights Club in Longbridge, Birmingham, were held recently in conjunction with the Bowflights Annual One-Way Clout.
It was muddy underfoot, but conditions were otherwise good and there were some excellent scores. Clout involves shooting at a long distance target marked by a flag (180yds for men and 140yds for ladies). Although less popular than standard target or field archery, it is extremely enjoyable.
Leamington archers Brian Tustin, Pete Hunnisett, Angela Corrie and Angela Cave, all shooting their first such tournament, earned GNAS tassel awards for achieving set scores.
Brian Duynstee (Meriden) beat the county record for gents’ longbow by a substantial 24 points, and Janette Ross (Meriden) came within three points of the existing ladies’ compound record.
Leamington brother and sister Michael and Caitlin McCarthy took part in the July postal competition organised by the Grand National Archery Society. The recently-published results show that eight-year old Michael won his under-nine recurve boys’ group with a splendid score of 612 for six dozen arrows. Sister Caitlin, 12, had to shoot a slightly longer distance and finished in a very creditable 5th place in the under-13 girls recurve section.
