Aylesford Hawks have made two new signings as they prepare for the new Warwickshire Premier League season.
Power-forward James Adler and guard Ian Rotherham have joined coach Richard Curtis’s team at the Bridge sports centre for the club’s 41st season. The champions will compete in a depleted competition featuring just five teams.

Curtis said: “It’s ve
ry disappointing. We will now be playing each team three times.

“It shows the difficulty of encouraging more teams to take part.”

With the new signings joining centre Erik Zimmerman and forwards Alex Birch and Nick Cockman, Hawks are hoping to successfully defend their title.

Hawks get their campaign under way this week with a trip to Tile Hill. The other teams are Premier Warriors, Ernsford and Warwick University.

Warwick Juniors, led by club founder John Mumford and Ian A’Kempis, have entered a strong-looking Warwickshire Second Division. Nuneaton and Westwood have both dropped down from the top flight.

Juniors have lost the services of Aaron and Robbie Satchwell, Tim Goundry, Toby Richards and Eddie Castelino, who have all gone to university. Captain Ricky Kular will have Ben Linnett and jack Keeling leading the attack, with Chris Wood also involved.

Trevor Wellstead and Ross Westland will be in the centre, while Myton School trio Calvin Moore, Mark Larner and Josh Hunt all get a first taste of men’s league basketball.

The team has a tough start with a trip to favourites Nuneaton. Anyone else wishing to be involved this season should contact John Mumford on 496572.
