Harrison edges it on Kenilworth course

Bob Harrison triumphed by the narrowest of margins in the Garrard Cup qualifier at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Harrison carded 76, nett 66, to finish top of Division A by virtue of a better back six than Robert Owens 74, nett 66. Jon Stranks 80, nett 67, finished third.

James Porter 87, nett 67, was the Division B winner, while Tony Ranger 88, nett 70, took the runners-up spot by edging out Barry Flick 88, nett 70, thanks to a better back nine. Owens recorded the best gross score of 74.

Golfers from 21 clubs competed in the Seniors Mixed Open at Crewe Lane. Kenilworth duo Les Jones and Angela Guest made good use of home advantage to win the stableford with 39 points.

Graham and Margaret Wright (Kenilworth) finished runners-up on countback from Ron and Ann Saywell (Kenilworth) and Ken and Judith Stokes (Naunton Downs) after all three pairs amassed 38 points.

Leamington & County duo David and Eira Hunt recorded the best front nine score, while Kibworth pair Alan and Pauline Wenlock claimed the best back nine prize.

Mike Hibberdine lifted the Gaydon Trophy at Leamington & County on Sunday, producing a great round of 82 less 18 nett 64.
The runner-up was Rod Meades (85 nett 66), while Kevin Watson (83 nett 66), Steve Osborne (86 nett 68) and Adrian Hawley (86 nett 69) also collected prizes. The field was 145 strong and the best gross was one under par 71 from Jamie Goode who wins the Lockheed Rosebowl scratch prize.

The ladies contested their Gaydon Trophy on Saturday, when Liz Murdoch won with 96-14-72. The silver division winner was Chris Lees (91-16-75), with Gill Thorpe (89-13-76) taking the runner-up spot.

The bronze division was a close-run contest too and required a last-nine countback before Melanie Clarkson (109-34-75) was able to claim first prize from Sandy Hudson (102-27-75).

Earlier in the week the ladies' 18-hole stableford was also a Dick Cunyngham Trophy qualifying round. Janice Lloyd won the silver division (36pts) from Margaret Sheepy and Chris Lees, both with 34.

Bronze division success went to Angela Bungard (36), a point ahead of Ali McLean. Janet Hill's 34 points earned third place. Copper Division winner Joan Smith 35 points was chased all the way by Ann Shepherd and Helen Callow who took second and third respectively with 34. Lloyd, Bungard and Smith all qualified for the Trophy.

Free golf 'taster sessions' with PGA pro Julian Mellor are on offer at Leamington & County. All are welcome and all equipment is provided.
The hour-long sessions are on Saturday June 7 and Saturday August 30 (2pm and 3pm). Call 428014.

Stoneleigh Deer Park members raised an impressive £29,650 for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital during the 2007/08 captains' tenure.
Johnny Reay Junior received a cheque on behalf of the hospital.

Of the total £16,200 was raised on the Johnny Reay golf day, held in appreciation of the treament he has received at the hospital.
The remaining £13,450 was generated at the captains' charity day.

Stoneleigh ladies played away at Robin Hood in the Warwickshire League, winning 4-3.

The Leamington & County ladies' section is supporting the 'Golf For Girls' initiative this spring, offering coaching for girls aged six and over at the Newbold Comyn course for just £1.
Potential newcomers are invited to Saturday morning coaching sessions with PGA professional Andy Hicks, starting tomorrow (Saturday, 10am-11am).
The sessions are for all standards – so don't worry if you have never picked up a golf club before. All equipment is provided.
