The Kenilworth championship finals produced some long matches, hard hitting and close finishes in the sunshine at Crackley Lane.
The men’s doubles, with James Cooper and James Roe against Paul Jennings and Bill Devitt, resulted in a three-set win for the former pair - but only after two hours and 20 minutes with no stops at changeovers.
Their hitting was ferocious and there
were some sparkling shots at the net including backhand drive volleys - probably the most difficult shot in tennis.
Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes beat Kate Perkins and Nicola Horobin 6-4, 6-3 in a long ladies’ doubles final. It was closer than the score suggests.
In the handicap singles, Tom Holmes (owe 60) beat Nico Rosser (owe ½ 50) 11-3. There were some long baseline exchanges between two very fit young players.
Paul Jennings turned the tables on James Roe in the mixed doubles, when he and his wife Melanie beat Kate Perkins and James 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in another exciting three-setter.
The centurions tournament for couples with a combined age over 100 saw another good win for Melanie Jennings. She and Mike Ducker beat Caroline Rhodes and Steve Proctor 6-2, 6-0.
Prizes will be distributed during an end-of-season supper at the club on Sunday evening.
n Kenilworth’s Tom Holmes and Charlie Griffin won the South Warwickshire Under-17 Doubles League final, beating a strong pair from Esporta in three exciting sets.
Tom has now been in the finals four times with different partners, winning it three times. This was Charlie's first final.
He and Tom now play the top North Warwickshire pair for the county-wide title - an honour Tom achieved two years ago with Nico Rosser.
Under-12s Elysha Amed and Sian Davies were runners-up in thier first final. Rachel Emmerson and Cindy Cowper had played their part in the earlier rounds, but only two could compete on the day.
