Snitterfield members had a trip to remember when a party of 38 bowlers and friends toured Jersey.
The party was tucking into breakfast on the island less than two hours after taking off and was soon on the green at the St Saviour’s club - a pace they kept up throughout a busy visit.
The Snipes opened with a 111-110 win over St Saviour’s, takin
g three of the six rinks. Captain David Bloxham skipped the best of them, a 20-13 result with D Washbourn, S Keal and B Day.
Next came the Les Creaux club, who took four of the six rinks for a 138-98 victory. The visitors took two rinks, skipped by R Freeston 15-14 and R Vizard 20-15.
The St Brelade club beat their guests 126-96. Terry Whitehouse skipped the sole Snitterfield rink win while Mike Tudge’s four drew theirs.
Sun BC club inflicted another narrow defeat on the Snipes, seeing them off 116-108 over another six mixed rinks.
The final match against Jersey BC was a daunting one, given the presence of several internationals in the hosts’ ranks. But the Snipes acquitted themselves well in a 130-89 defeat, winning two rinks (A Keal 24-11, R Vizard 23-16).
Members raised £490 for the Cotswolds National Star College, a hospital for children with special needs. Club president David Stevens collected ‘fines’ from the party all week and matched the total collected.
The event was organised by Debbie and David Bloxham.
Snitterfield were on more familiar turf against Avenue, but the Leamington side gave them little comfort in a 112-66 win, taking four of the five triples and drawing the fifth.
Rink scores (Avenue skips first): A Smith 27 P Vale-Humphreys 11; B Henry 20 R Jones 9; P Gilbert 26 D Corrie 11; L Smith 19 A Harrison 19; C Lea 20 M Adams 14.
The Snipes ladies were beaten 55-46 by triples visitors Stratford. Snitterfield’s rinks were skipped by D Bloxham 5-29, S Whitehouse 24-12 and P Johnson 17-14.
Royal Leamington shared the rink honours with Jaguar at Victoria Park on Saturday, but it was the Coventry men who were the happier.
The visitors won 111-100, having held the overall lead for much of the contest. It was all square at 23-23 after five ends, but by the tenth the visitors were 53-44 up and they led 99-83 after 18.
Bill Port skipped the best Spa rink, a 20-16 win with Richard Wilsdon, Reg Simmons and Andrew Woodward. His fellow skips were Ivor Harris 11-12, Bill Edkins 20-19, Colin Such 16-15, Tony Barnett 18-19 and Geoff Cook 15-19.
