Officials will explore the possibility of adding a post office to a proposed joint customer service centre for Warwick District Council and Warwickshire County Council.
Members of Warwick District Council's executive voted last week for officers to develop a business case to set up a 'one stop shop' at Riverside House.

Coun Les Caborn told councillors he and officials were looking at putting a "first class" custo
mer service centre at the Milverton Hill offices.

It would mean residents could speak to officers about district council services such as refuse collection, housing and parking in the same place as Warwickshire County Council services such as education and social services.

There are also hopes that a post office could be included, after both Warwick district councillor Les Caborn and Warwick and Leamington MP James Plaskitt came up with the idea.

Coun Bill Gifford represented the council's overview and scrutiny committee, which examines the executive's decisions.

He said some Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors had doubts about the move from the town centre, but most supported the idea.

Earlier plans to have a customer service centre in the Pump Room failed due to lack of space, and Coun Gifford (Lib Dem, Leamington Milverton) said Riverside House had the best disabled access and parking.

He added: "The majority view is that Riverside House is the most sensible place it could be.

"If you added a post office it could be superb. It would certainly benefit the 100,000 users who come to Riverside House every year."

Other councillors warned there was no bus service currently serving the offices. Coun Bob Crowther (Lab, Leamington Clarendon) expressed regret the centre could not be in the town centre, but welcomed the possibility of a replacement post office for Milverton.

Coun Caborn admitted the idea had drawbacks, but added the site had more advantages than disadvantages.

l Members voted unanimously to support development of the business case. Officers will work on the study in time for the executive's June meeting.
