Travellers may receive a chilly welcome in Warwick district in future, after damage caused by one group left a Warwick picnic site closed for a week.
Churned up mud and piles of rubbish and vegetation were among the debris at Myton Fields after a large group of Irish travellers left on Thursday. The travellers have moved on to an unknown destination.

Warwick District Council owns the site and estimates clearing rubbish and repairs to turf will cost more than £2,500. The same group left refuse estimated to cost more than £2,000 to clean up at another car park in Hampton Road.

The council's executive committee will discuss measures which can be taken against future groups in June.

District council spokesman Richard Brooker said: "The council is currently reviewing it's policies towards members of the travelling community."

He explained recent heavy rain meant it was likely the car park would be closed over the May Bank Holiday, but the need for repairs mean it will be closed until May 10.

He also urged members of the public not to accept work from travellers.
Mr Brooker said: "The results of their efforts at hedge trimming and tree lopping now litter the Myton Fields site in several large mounds.

"Residents accepting offers to do work are effectively paying twice. Once to the labourers, and again through their council tax in cleaning up. We have also had a report of a local resident in the vicinity paying £600 to have his drive 'jet washed'."
