Police are warning drivers to be on their guard after thieves lured a woman away from her car to steal from her handbag.
The theft took place when the woman returned to her car outside Asda in Chesterton Drive shortly after 5pm yesterday (Thursday July 15).

As she was loading her shopping was approached by a man who asked for directions.

When she returned to the car she noticed that her purse had been stolen from her handbag which was on the front seat of the car.

The man who distracted her is described as a stocky white male, between 40 and 50 years old, 5ft 8ins tall with dark hair and sideburns. He was wearing jeans and a white T-shirt and was carrying a bathroom brochure. It is thought that he spoke with a Spanish accent.

The stolen purse was pink leather and contained bank and credit cards and a driving licence.

Insp Martyn Stephens of the Warwickshire Police Community Protection department said: "It is very easy to be distracted when you are busy loading your car with shopping, or when you are heading home after a busy day at the office, and if someone asks you for directions you want to help.

"Unfortunately, being helpful can lead to you being taken advantage of as was the case in this incident.

"It is important that you do not leave valuables on show in your vehicle, even if you are nearby, and if you do move away make sure that you lock the car first. It may seem over cautious but it is worthwhile."

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the man or his accomplice behaving suspiciously in the car park.

Anyone with information should call Leamington police station on 415000 or can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
