Your guide to Easter holiday activities in south Warwickshire

Spring is here and so are the Easter holidays - and luckily, there is plenty for children and families to do in south Warwickshire over the next two weeks.

Next Saturday (April 19), as part of Warwick’s celebrations for its 1,100th anniversary and St George’s Day, there will be a procession through the town, starting from Market Square and led by St George on horseback, as well as a Medieval market, shield-making workshop, street entertainment and shows on stage with Touch FM.

At Warwick Castle, visitors can see the world’s largest bird of prey, the Andean Condor, take flight throughout the holidays, while at Kenilworth Castle, children can take part in the brand new Easter Adventure Quest during the holidays and a celebration of St George, with a dragon coming to life on April 26 and 27, as well as plenty of games and activities. Fans of Shaun the Sheep can meet the famous character, with his flock, at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon from tomorrow (April 12) until April 27, where he will be leading an Easter trail and activities, while the centre is also running children’s competitions and themed days throughout the holidays. Hill Close Gardens in Warwick is giving visitors the chance to experience a Victorian Easter with a themed exhibition from April 19 to 21, while on Easter Sunday the gardens are hosing an Eggstravaganza chocolate egg hunt and Easter Bonnet parade. Warwickshire County Council’s Heritage Education staff have organised a host of activities to keep youngsters entertained at various venues. Children can learn about travel in the county throughout the ages and make their own vehicle-for-the-future at Market Hall Museum in Warwick on April 16 and at Leamington library on April 17. An activity that will appeal to many, Sweets and Treats, taking place at St Johns Museum in Warwick on April 17, will give participants the chance to discover how sugary delights were made in the past and invent their own treat using Victorian ingredients. Then on April 19, youngsters can join in Warwick’s celebrations for its 1,100th anniversary and St George’s Day by making their own coat of arms shield, taking inspiration from historic examples, at Market Hall Museum.

Children can also get into the spirit of Easter by trying on historic caps, bonnets and hats and learning how fashions have changed, before making their own, at the Market Hall Museum on April 23 and at Leamington library on April 25.

Other activities, all taking place at St Johns Museum, include Friday at the Movies - learning about what Victorians did for a night out - on April 25; Feasts and treats - discovering how people in the past celebrated special occasions - on April 15; Crime and Punishment on April 16; and Made here - looking at the industrial revolution in Warwickshire - on April 17. There are also many sports activities taking place at Newbold Comyn (Leamington) and St Nicholas Park (Warwick) leisure centres, Abbey Fields swimming pool in Kenilworth, the John Atkinson sports centre in Myton Road, Warwick, and the Meadow community sports centre at Kenilworth School.
