Warwick's new primary school on track to open this year

A new primary school that is in the process of being built in Warwick is on track to open later this year.

Construction on Heathcote Primary School, which is being built on Harbury Lane, started in October 2016 and according to the project leader Andy Mitchell, the work is all on track to be completed for the start of the new school year in September.

The new primary school will also become part of the Community Academy Trust, which is the same trust that Woodloes Primary School and Budbrooke Primary School belong to.

Mr Mitchell, who is also the head teacher at Woodloes Primary School, said: “Now that the site is coming together we are not just working off plans but with something that is very tangible and it is starting to get quite exciting.

“We anticipate the building being ready in August and that it would be handed over to us in the summer then we have the opportunity to get all the resources and furniture in and make sure the IT is all up and running and working. We want everything to be in place for a successful start in September.”

A national advertising campaign has been launched to find the new head teacher for the school and it is hoped that the new head will be appointed by the end of March.

When the school initially opens it will only be accepting children for key stage one learning, which includes reception class, year one and year two classes.

There will also be a nursery on the site, which will be privately-run by a nursery provider. Interviews for the nursery provider were held last week and it is currently unknown who has been appointed.

Mr Mitchell said: “We are not opening the whole school from day one. It is hoped that new places being offered is going to be linked with the sale of the new houses on the new site on Harbury Lane as more families move to the area, so we are going to look at the availability of the school close to the growing demand of the new community that is being built up there.

“We are in a very exciting stage if the new school development.

“Everything is on track to make a successful start in September and we are looking forward to meeting our new school population in the next few months and welcoming them all to the new school in September.”
