Walking football may be coming to Kenilworth

A more relaxed version of football aimed at over-50s could be coming to Kenilworth if there is enough interest from residents.

Walking football, which is a slower, non-contact version of the sport, is being organised by football coach Darren Wheeler, who has already set up successful clubs in Daventry, Rugby and Lutterworth.

He said: “About a year ago I set up a walking football club at Daventry Leisure Centre, which has gone from strength to strength.

“There’s nothing at the moment in Kenilworth or Leamington, and I felt people were missing out.

“It’s surprising how energetic it really is - if you came to watch you’d see the guys come off sweating buckets. It’s really good for them.

“It’s also about getting people out as well - the social side is a big part of it.

“We’re now looking for interest from players and when they would like to play.”

Darren also wished to emphasise the casual nature of the sessions and pointed out that both sexes were welcome.

He added: “If people turn up for one week and can’t come the next two weeks, that’s fine.

“All players need is a pair of comfortable shoes, fitness clothes and a bottle of water.”

The sessions will begin at the Kenilworth Centre, but may move in the future depending on numbers attending and whether an indoor court can be sorted for winter.

Although the sessions are aimed at over-50s, the age rule is fairly relaxed.

Each session lasts an hour and costs £3 to play. To register interest, call Darren on 07885 509499 or email [email protected]
