The flowers that bloom in the winter
MORE than 40 varieties of snowdrop were on show at Hill Close Gardens in Warwick last weekend - and most of them will still be flowering to greet visitors over the next few weeks.
The annual Snowdrop Weekend attracted some 300 people to the restored Victorian plots where head gardener Gary Leaver had brought in some of the plants in pots to allow closer inspection.
Gary also regularly leads conducted tours around the gardens just off Bread and Meat Close.
Trustee Rosemary Mitchell said altogether the old allotments can boast 80 different single and double flowering varieties of snowdrop with some of the lovely pre-1900 types proving to be robust “tough old birds” particularly resistant to disease.
Winter opening hours are usually from 11am until 3pm but will widen from 10.30am until 3.30pm as the days grow longer.
Volunteers say the cafe will reopen again on Good Friday and are already planning a range of activities, including an Easter egg hunt on March 31.
