Warwick town clerk Derek Maudlin and his wife Ros were invited to share afternoon tea with the Queen in the gardens of Buckingham Palace last week.

The pair were nominated for the garden party by the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Timothy Cox.

Derek, who has spent 52 years working in local government - the last 15 at Warwick - said it was a pleasure to be among so many people who had made such great contributions to charities and sport.

He added: “When we arrived in the grounds of the palace the band was playing and the buffet was exceptional with, surprisingly, not a cucumber sandwich in sight.”
