Ale lovers have raised a glass in celebration of Warwick’s first micropub which has already earnt a coveted place in the Good Beer Guide.

The Old Post Office in West Street has been named in CAMRA’s (Campaign for Real Ale) 2016 guide - and runner up in the groups’ Heart of Warwickshire pub of the year 2015.

All just over one year after landlord, Tom Douglas opened the doors on the small West Street bar for ale lovers.

The passionate landlord, who has worked in pubs for over 30 years, said he opened the town’s first ale house to provide something for lovers of the drink and help appeal to a new generation.

He said: “To be given a mention is excellent, and to be runner up in the area, it’s all another good sign for real ale.

“Real ale does have a big customer base, we have a lot of regulars and younger people coming in to try out different ales, it’s refreshing to see.

“We have had over 200 ales on in our first year it is just really good to see the interest in ales booming.”

The pub, which does not sell spirits or food, promotes flavours from around the country including regular local specials.

The independent ale house was selected for inclusion in the guide for the first time as CAMRA judges stated: “It has been decorated with a large collection of pub memorabilia collected by Tom the landlord which gives it an eclectic look and feel.”

The Old Post Office is named alongside the Cape of Good Hope, Punch Bowl and Wild Boar in Warwick.

And has joined a host of other emerging so called, micropubs already making a big impact on the real ale scene.

Roger Protz, editor of the 2016 guide said such pubs are booming with the rise in ales.

He said: “Micropubs prove the old saying that small is beautiful. Many of them are based in disused buildings. They have carved out a new relationship between drinkers, publicans and brewers.”
