Female school pupils across south Warwickshire can learn new skills in engineering by taking part in a new four-day course next summer.

The Smallpeice Trust, a charity that supports the education of engineering to young people, is launching a new Girls into Engineering course at Warwick University in July 2017.

The course, aimed at girls in year 9, will be based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects and course participants will work with experts from leading firms on projects and learn about engineering as a career.

The course sponsored by the Warwick University, Sofronie and Leonardo, takes place from July 17 to 20 and is designed to enable young women to try their hands at the challenges facing engineers, alongside industry and academic experts. The course will offer a hands-on experience and students will be able to get to grips with the latest technology ideas in science and engineering.

All of the Smallpeice Trust courses are linked to the national curriculum and are designed to improve core skills such as team building, financial management, communication and problem solving.

Dr Kevin P.Stenson, chief executive at the Smallpeice Trust, said: “For 50 years, the Smallpeice Trust has provided young people with the means to explore their passion for STEM subjects and engineering.

“Following one of our most successful years, the 2017 course range will put cutting edge science and engineering ideas in the hands of young people across the country. We are very proud of the courses we can provide this year, including introductions to artificial intelligence and mobile robotics among others, and the high level of early sign ups suggests that we have captured the imagination of bright young minds too.”

The Girls into Engineering course costs £195. Further details at www.SmallpeiceTrust.org.uk
