Police tried to scale a security fence to reach the man but ended up calling in the fire service to smash the lock.

By the time they reached him just after 7am the man, believed to be in his sixties, was out of the water and sitting on a pontoon with his legs in the river. It’s thought he could have fallen or jumped from the bridge on Banbury Road.

He was treated for cuts to his head and taken to Warwick Hospital for treatment.
