Lord Leicester, or Leycester, not welcomed in Warwick

Visitors to Warwick’s Tourist Information Centre on the corner of Castle Street, might enjoy seeing this modern painting by Rugby artist Lynsey Cleaver which aims to recreate a well-documented event in the town on 29 September, 1571.

This was when no less a figure that Lord Leicester arrived to a bleak welcome. Historians feel sure he would have ridden up Castle Street, then the London road but later blocked by the earl to extend castle walls, passing Oken’s House (now a tea rooms) and Guy’s Tower.
