Warwick’s £8m retirement site that’s not for the retiring kind

Ambitious plans for an £8 million retirement complex at Warwick Gates that comes complete with hobby rooms, a restaurant and a Ring and Ride bus service for the wider community, are to go before the district council next month.

Gallagher Estates which has options on land at Earls Rivers Avenue, between Warwick Gates and Warwick town centre, is collaborating with English Care Villages whose chairman, Keith Cockell, was involved in setting up the Bede village in north Warwickshire many years ago.

Mr Cockell believes that people planning their retirement don’t just want to sit and watch television but are often keen to continue to educate themselves.

He says: “Art appreciation classes, painting, bridge, bingo and music are very popular activities for many older people who may say they want to continue living in their own home but in many cases don’t want to live isolated lives and become dependent on their families.”

Jobs for some 110 people would also be created if the plans are approved and building can start at the end of the year.

Figures for Warwickshire show there are currently 26,000 local people aged 80 plus. This number is expected to rise to 56,000 by 2030.

* English Care Homes will sell 98 assisted living apartments, and offer 15 others for shared ownership, at 75 per cent of the price, plus five for rent.

In addition, there will also be 30 close-care apartments and a core 48-bed registered nursing home which would be divided into four smaller ‘family-sized’ units, each with its own separate day and dining rooms.

A bus will operate along the lines of the Ring and Ride service to ferry residents and local people living in Warwick Gates to events.

In addition an off-site facility nearby will be built for 14 adults with either learning difficulties on autism.
