‘Sex ad wallpaper is not meant to offend’ says bar owners

The owners of Moo Bar in Leamington have hit back against claims that its wallpaper depicting sex ads is offensive to women.

We reported last week that students had threatened to boycott the bar and a petition had been launched.

Moo Bar did not comment at the time but they released a statement this week.

It said the ads from the 1980s are used in an artistic manner to arouse debate about the changes in morals concerning women and prostitution.

A spokesperson added: “While the intention was to be provocative, we refute any suggestion that they are fabricated, sexist, racist or violent. The kink cards were a small part of the overall scheme and not one comment has been made about the juxtaposed images of the near naked male models which form an integral part of the overall scheme. We think this silence speaks volumes. In response to the flawed and misleading petition from the Warwick University Anti Sexism Society, who object to the images used, we can only say sorry if we’ve upset anyone, but the very nature of art through history has often been divisive and controversial. The police visited the bar last week and were happy that the interior was not breaking any laws.”
