‘Mindless’ burglars could cost scouts dear

SCOUTS in Warwick have been dismayed by the latest break-in at their headquarters during which a valuable laptop projector was stolen.

Just days after celebrating their 35th anniversary, the 7th Warwick Woodloes Scouts, based in Bluebell Woods, off Twycross Walk, found they were once again the victims of “selfish, mindless” thieves who threaten the viability of the group.

The thieves made off with a laptop projector, but the break-in will cost the youth organisation more than the cost of replacing it.

Cub Scout leader Pam Hinks, who originally founded the group with her husband John, said: “It was only last year that we had £1,000 worth of tenting equipment stolen.

“Why, I ask myself, has sheer vandalism by mindless and very selfish people had to take place once again at our beloved Scout hut?

“We have installed CCTV cameras but they’ve stolen the hard drive from inside as well as the projector, two laminators, a printer and stripped our kitchen bare, taking even the tea and coffee.

“At the end of the day we are a charitable organisation and now, just to add to our worries, our insurance will go sky high.”

Pam believes the break-in happened in the evening around May 24 when leaders took many of the cubs on a visit to the nearby Sikh temple as part of their religious awareness badge.

Ben Wesson, a trainee assistant cub Scout leader, said; “There have been a number of break-ins over the last few years and this always means the running costs of the group increase.

“It could even mean a rise in the subscription fees parents have to pay for their child to attend beavers, cubs, scouts or the Explorers, which would be an awful shame - and could perhaps prevent some from attending.”

Both Ben and Pam are appealing to the conscience of the thief or thieves and ask them to think hard about returning the stolen items to prevent them from having to go through with an insurance claim.

PC Trent McMurray of Warwick police says because the CCTV hard drive was stolen they have no images available.
