Man guilty of sexual assault on ten-year-old

A WARWICK man who kissed and groped a ten-year-old girl after drinking 30 cans of lager has been ordered to live at a probation hostel as part of a suspended jail sentence and supervision order.

Dale Radburn, 34, of Mollington Grove, Hatton Park, had pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to sexually assaulting the young girl in June last year.

Radburn remained in custody while he was assessed for a place in the hostel and returned to court this week when Judge Alan Parker sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.

The judge ordered him to remain at the probation hostel for three months, with an 8pm until 8am curfew. He also ordered two years supervision and that Radburn register as a sex offender for the next ten years as well as paying his victim £500 compensation.

During the original hearing, the court heard how the girl was on her way home from the park with friends when she was approached by Radburn, who she described as “the drunk man” who was in the company of another man she knew.

She told the court that when one man’s laptop computer fell down between some dustbins, Radburn lifted her up so that she could try to reach down the narrow gap. When she failed he picked her up to put her back down which was when the sexual assault took place.

Prosector Tom Walkling said: “She describes him as kissing her down her neck and squeezing her privates, touching her over her clothes. She was quite scared and went to her aunt’s house nearby. The police were called and the defendant was arrested.”

When he was interviewed by police, Radburn said he’d drunk 30 cans of lager that day.

After originally denying the assault he told the court: “I can see no reason why these children would make up a story about this. I do not know them and they do not know me. I accept I must have touched her as alleged.”

The court heard how Radburn had problems with his memory as a result of an accident in 2001. Judge Parker said while no sentence would seem adequate to the girl’s family, he felt Radburn receiving professional help was the best way of protecting the public in the future.
