ALTHOUGH it has taken six months longer than anticipated, the scaffolding is finally coming down from the town’s Market Hall Museum, which dates back to 1670.

Steve Smith, the county council’s head of property, originally expected workers would only have to repair broken slates and replace lead missing from the roof of the Grade II* listed building in Market Place. In the end the job cost £40,000.

Mr Smith said: “Once we got up to the belltower we found most of the timber was rotten and so took the decision to get all the work done while the scaffolding was still in place.”
